• Albemarle awards a $330 million contract to UGL, a member of the CIMIC group
• UGL will support construction of lithium processing Trains 3 & 4 at the world leading plant
• Albemarle and its major Kemerton contractors launch massive recruitment campaign

PERTH, Australia, August 9, 2023 - Albemarle, a global leader in providing essential elements for mobility, energy, connectivity and health, has awarded a major contract to UGL as part of expansion of the Kemerton Lithium Hydroxide Processing Plant, near Bunbury, in Western Australia.

Albemarle’s Kemerton Expansion Project will see construction of processing trains three and four with plant capacity set to double at full capacity to up to 100 ktpa (100,000 metric tonnes) of lithium hydroxide each year.

UGL’s Kemerton expansion contract is valued around $330 million and will include:
• structural, mechanical and piping works;
• electrical and instrumentation works; and
• associated procurement and fabrication of piping and other items.

Albemarle’s investment in expansion of Kemerton, announced in May 2023, is the biggest investment by any company in downstream processing of lithium in Australia with future production to support the manufacture of an estimated 2.4 million electric vehicles annually.

Albemarle’s VP, Capital Projects Australia, Josh Rowan said the contract was one of the largest ever awarded by Albemarle in Australia and coincided with the launch of an intensive three-month recruitment drive coordinated by Albemarle in support of its major Kemerton contractors.

“We are Australia’s largest producer and manufacturer of lithium and our Kemerton plant is about to get a whole lot bigger,” Mr Rowan said. “We know that construction of trains 3 and 4 will create over 1000 new jobs across all of our major contractors and UGL is a major employer among several companies that are already recruiting in earnest.

“Kemerton expansion is a boon for jobs across construction, engineering, support services and more and we are supporting our contractors with this recruitment drive because their ability to employ skilled workers is critical to delivering the project safely and on schedule.”

Mr Rowan said that workers interested in being a part of the clean energy transition by helping to expand the biggest and most productive lithium hydroxide processing plant in the nation, should visit www.albemarle.com/careers for direct links to jobs across Kemerton’s major contractors.
